Bibliography

The bibliography is presented in a pdf file. This list is intended to provide background and start-up information for further reading. It concentrates on key papers for of the findings specifically discussed in the text, and on books/edited volumes that provide comprehensive overviews of oceanography, environmental science, and geology in general, and on relevant specialised levels.

The list is by no means exhaustive, and many very important papers have had to be (reluctantly) omitted – a complete listing would require well over 20 pages. However, the key papers cited offer references to those other important studies. Note that I have refrained from listing individual contributions published in edited volumes/ special issues, but that instead the volume’s overall title and reference is given. The author’s own scientific contributions are listed separately at the end (see website for complete listing). These give the fully referenced context to the ideas presented in this text, and therefore provide useful initial guidance to target further readings of the specialist literature.

Acknowledgements

First of all, my wife Yolanda and sons Ewout and Yarno must be acknowledged for their great patience during my academic exploits and the compilation of this manuscript.

Next, I thank my colleague John Thomson and my brother Frank Rohling for their critical evaluations of earlier versions of the manuscript, and for stimulating discussions and advice.

My contribution to the research behind this text would not have been possible without the efforts of (1) my PhD students Mia Fenton, Angela Hayes, Ramadan Abu-Zied, Tim Cane, James Casford, and Babette Hoogakker, (2) the mass spectrometry Experimental Officer Steve Cooke; and (3) Dr. Sacha de Rijk who worked with me as a Postdoctoral research fellow within the context of EC MAST 3 project CLIVAMP.

I finally extend my thanks to all the CLIVAMPires and the army of international sapropel-research colleagues for the countless in-depth discussions.

The EC MAST programme is thanked for support to some of the underlying research, under EC MAST-3 project CLIVAMP (MAS3-CT95-0043)
