Southampton University’s School of Ocean and Earth Science, based at the Southampton Oceanography Centre, is searching for a Research Scientist (RS) in stable (C, O, N) isotope mass spectrometry. The suitable candidate will have considerable and appropriate experience to support analyses of carbonate, water, and organic matter samples. The equipment at the facility currently comprises a fully automated Europa Geo2020 mass spectrometer with an individual acid bath carbonate preparation device (CAPS), and a manual VG 903 with an ISOMASS water equilibration front end. Through allocation of SRIF funds, two new mass spectrometers will be added in spring/ early summer 2002; a Micromass IsoPrime with a MULTIPREP individual acid bath carbonate preparation device, and a Micromass IsoPrime with an Elemental Analyser/combustion front end. The former three instruments are operated in dual inlet mode, are totally dedicated to natural isotope abundance ratios, and are located in one laboratory. The latter is operated in continuous flow mode, concerns labelled abundance ratios, and resides in a separate lab. The RS will be responsible for maintenance, support, and day-to-day running of the facility; for participation in the supervision of students using the facility; and for the execution of consultancy tasks undertaken by the facility. The RS will also be expected to be involved in strategic development to maintain the quality of the facility and to keep it up to date with new developments. Preference will be given to individuals with a proven record of research involvement.
